It was a late on a Friday night and I had just finished my shift at the DQ (one of the strip malls near Willow) and I was hustling out the door to get to my car. It’s a pretty big parking lot, but they want employees park sort of towards the back on the side farthest from the restaurants so that the customers have the more convenient spots with the shorter walk to their food. Anyway, I was walking back toward my car when I heard what was quite possibly the strangest sound I’ve ever heard.
I was immediately on the alert, scanning the area for the source of the noise, and it was so dark out that I couldn’t really make anything out at first. I kept watching the darkness in beyond the parking lot, though. Just before I reached my car, a figure appeared in the beam of light from the streetlamp at the edge of the lot and when I spotted it, I almost couldn’t believe my eyes. It was him, the Hidden Man. A man, I think, or something that looked pretty close to a man. The first thing I noticed about him was how big he was. I mean, the guy was massive. And he was so dirty. Not just dirty like he was covered in dirt and grime, but there was also trash all over him, almost like he was wearing a suit made of the stuff.
There was something in his hand too. It looked a bit like a hatchet, but he swung it more like a baseball bat. It looked like he was using it to hack a ratty old sofa to pieces. He dragged the sofa into the light and circled it a couple times before touching it at all, almost like he was beginning some weird ritual. When he started swinging at the old piece of furniture, I was confused and a little surprised, but I’ve got to say I was starting to get a bit scared, too. He absolutely demolished the thing. Every swing tore the upholstery to shreds and there was stuffing flying everywhere like clumps of snow. And he didn’t stop when the poor sofa was down to its frame, oh no, he kept on swinging until the sofa was a sad little pile on the ground. He stood looking at it as I stood staring at him. I was sure he had tired himself out, but little did I know the ritual wasn’t done yet.
He started shouting at it. Just bellowing and whooping at the pile of furniture on the ground. This was the same sound I’d heard when I first came outside, except now it sounded louder and even more crazed than before. When he suddenly began to move, I nearly screamed. I’m not proud of it, but I thought he was coming to get me or something. As it turns out, he we actually starting to dance. He kept up the freakish hollering chant, but now he was also lumbering in a circle around the remains of the sofa with the hatchet waving wildly in the air. The guy was jumping up and bowing down and I was so stunned at what I was seeing that I couldn’t help but laugh. Just a little bit, like a surprised burst of laughter. And he must have heard me, because before I knew it, he had whipped his head around to glare right at me. And I was frozen in place. I could barely even breathe. Because the pair of eyes that were boring into mine were glowing bright yellow.
It felt like a small eternity that we stood just watching each other, but when he shifted his whole body to face me, I was not about to stick around and find out what was going through the huge hatchet-wielding trash man’s head. I yanked open the door of my car and jumped inside, starting the engine as quickly as I could and checking to make sure the guy wasn’t coming after me. The engine must’ve spooked him, I guess, because the last glimpse I caught was him dashing off back into the darkness. I’m still not entirely sure what I saw that night, but it’s not something I’ll forget anytime soon.
